There’s probably nothing more satisfying, more comforting than an egg sandwich, wrapped tightly in a foil wrapper warming your hand to the touch. The eggs are cooked over easy or maybe scrambled, topped with a layer of melty American cheese, and maybe a splash or two of hot sauce, and pressed between two buttery, crunchy yet doughy pieces of bread — be it in the form of a biscuit, bulky roll, bagel, or English muffin. We’re really not that picky so long as our breakfast sando comes with just the right proportion of carbs, protein, and fat to keep us going until lunch.
Just as comforting is that it can be found at any McDonald’s across the world or any deli or diner in America. And, of course you can make them at home with just a few simple ingredients.
Until recently, I could probably go to my grave never having a different kind of breakfast sandwich than the one I grew up with, never knowing about a different kind of breakfast sandwich because the kind that was perfect as-is didn’t require any kind of gourmet upgrade or fancy reboot. But then I saw this YouTube video of a popular restaurant in Seoul, South Korea where they make their sandwiches with garlic butter toast! Nothing will ever be the same again.
The sandwich is made with soft, thick, brioche-like bread, slathered in garlic herb butter sauce, and then grilled. It’s stuffed with a slice of cheese and a couple strips of crispy bacon just like the American version, and then topped with two kinds of eggs — that’s right, two — one over hard and one scrambled. Upon serving, the toast is drizzled with mayo, and garnished with a light dusting of chives. Are you salivating yet?
